Ahead of the Tenth Conference of Parties (FCTC COP10) of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which will convene in Panama in November with representatives from all signatories, Smoke-Free Sweden embarked on a global outreach initiative to interact with global experts. Studying how adult smokers in Sweden have prevented millions of deaths was the aim.
We travelled to Stockholm, São Paulo, Johannesburg, Dhaka, and Warsaw. The takeaway was clear: Sweden’s success in going smoke-free has been largely attributed to its ability to make smokeless alternatives to cigarettes widely available, socially acceptable, and reasonably priced.
Everyone we spoke with who is an expert worldwide agreed that Sweden approached things differently. We were curious about what exactly made Sweden’s approach to alternative nicotine products so successful. And why aren’t tobacco control and education initiatives sufficient on their own to lower the prevalence of smoking? The Swedish Smoke-Free movement gained some essential information.
