Low rates of vaping by teenagers

Action on Smoking and Health

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), ‘Use of e-cigarettes among young people in Great Britain’, June 2021

Key facts:
  • With more than 3 million vapers, the UK has a high vaping rate, although the data indicates that youngsters do not vape frequently.
  • According to research conducted by the top anti-smoking NGO in the UK, the vast majority of 11–17-year-olds have never used or are unaware of e-cigarettes (77.7%).
  • The main reason that young people between the ages of 11 and 18 vape is to give it a try (49.3%), not because they think it looks nice (1.2%). Because e-cigarettes are more easily accessible (1.1%) and less expensive (0.8%) than traditional cigarettes, people are less likely to choose them.
  • While some young people dabble with e-cigarettes, especially those who have tried smoking, regular use of them is still quite low, according to ASH.
